Smoking, and Smoking Relations With the Lungs

In the average cigarrete that are sold today world wide, there are an incredible amount of 4000 or more chemicals inside the cigarette. The most harmful inside the cigarette are listed below:
Chemicals
Description
Benzene
(petrol additive)
  • A transparent hydrocarbon (cyclic) which could be taken from petroleum and coal. It is a solvent (mixture of liquid or solid to a solute) in which used for fuel for vehicles to operate and it could also be used for chemical production. This chemical appears in the excrete of smoke from the cigarette.
  • Contains carcinogen (a substance that causes cancer) which is related to leukemia (a cancer that affects the blood cells)
Formaldehyde
(embalming fluid)
  • A transparent liquid, it is highly poisonous, its functioned for preserving dead bodies. This chemical appears in the excrete of smoke from the cigarette
Ammonia
(substance for toilet cleaning)
  • This substance is for the flavors of the cigarettes, separates nicotine from the tobacco transforming substance to a gas.
  • Ammonia is also discovered in dry cleaning fluids.
Acetone
  • This chemical is used for the nail polish remover (solvent). It is inside cigarette smoke.
Tar
  • It is a substance in which you inhale from smoke (dark)
  • About 70% of tar is inhaled in the cigarette and the other 30% gets excreted.
Nicotine
  • This chemicals is most well-known for its addictive substance, it is named as the most addictive known to mankind. It is a rapid acting medical or non-medical poison.
Arsenic
  • This chemical is rat poisoning
Hydrogen Cyanide
  • Gas used in gas chambers (gas chambers are chambers that were used by the Nazis to kill off millions of Jewish people)

Effects of Smoking Towards the Lungs

Description
Loss of lung elasticity
  • When smoke is inhaled to the lungs, the lung expands then shrinks to its original.
  • It forms due to the elastic tissues lining in the inner walls.
  • But when it is affected by smoke, the tissues get rigid as a consequence of tar (the black residue) inhaled through the cigarette.
  • The lung then does not retract anymore.
  • Stays as expanded form, making it much harder to exhale.
Mucus clogging
  • By inhaling the smoke, tar has been absorbed into the lung
  • It blocks and clogs up the cilia (to push dirt collected and push it out to nose or mouth for excretion)
  • Since it gets blocked up, it does not function well and so dirt and bad chemicals stay inside and does not get excreted
  • This is why smokers tend to cough a lot to take out the dust and bad chemicals.
  • The chemicals would also decrease the oxygen supplied to the heart
Air sacs malfunction
  • The expanding and contracting, it loses its flexibility and elasticity
  • So then there are more air sacs that rupture
  • Causing the air pockets to rupture because of undue pressure.

Carbon Monoxide
  • Replaces oxygen received to the blood cells
  • Blood cells do not get oxygen and suffocate
  • People exposed to carbon Monoxide will suffer from headaches, nausea and vomiting.
  • They may not think or hear as clear
Tar
  • Affects cilia in lungs (refer to Mucus clogging on table displayed earlier)
  • Struggle to breath and exhale
  • Stains teeth and turns fingernails yellow

Smokers vs Non Smokers

Smokers are more likely to develop lung infections due to the bad chemicals that they inhale in within single or more puffs of smoke. They could not stop smoking easily due to the highly addictive chemical called "nicotine". The chemicals in the cigarette is a lot more than the amount analyzed from just pollution or normal smoke that people inhale in industrialized cities. But there are still chances of getting lung cancer, but the chances to catch an infection for the smokers is more than the non smokers, one is direct and the other is more natural so the chances reduce.

many other problems can be caused from Smoking, for example brain stroke, bladder, Uterus and stomach cancers. There is also the coronary artery disease which plaque builds up in the coronary artery which supply the heart with oxygen.

Additionally, smoking is bad for the entire body system itself. There is a lot of evidence pointing that cigarette smoking increases the risk of developing many diseases, including lung cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and more.

One of the ways that cigarette smoking is so dangerous, is because the cigarette is loaded with disease causing free radicals.

Free radicals go hand in hand with antioxidants. Free radicals are produced in the body all the time through metabolic processes, such as cellular respiration. When cellular respiration occurs, one of the by-products of the electron transport chain is the production of free radicals. This is natural, as our bodies also produce antioxidants to combat the free radicals.

Free radicals: Are oxygen atoms that have lost an electron (- charge), and in turn, the net charge after wards is positive. From the positive charge, the atom is then unstable, and to become stable once more, it has to "steal" an electron from another atom. This creates a chain reaction, in which the unstable and 'explosive' free radicals keep stealing electrons from other atoms, turning them into free radicals. Free radicals cause harm to our bodies

When people are exposed to the sun for too long, or smoke cigarettes and tobacco would have the free radical levels in their body overpowering the antioxidant levels in the body, that leads to damage on the body, including: damage to DNA, cancer, lung diseases, cardiovascular diseases, quicker aging…

Something that can be done to prevent excess free radicals levels is to eat foods rich in Vitamin E and Vitamin C. Not smoking would definitely be good as well, which is why male smokers aged 45-65 are 5 times as vulnerable to death from certain diseases; bronchitis and emphysema.
